The first thing I learnt was: East Asian theatrical community is small. Very small indeed. At first I thought everyone knew each other. (They didn’t, it just felt intimidating. Like on the first day of school and you don’t have a best friend to hold your hand yet.)
This week we did an exercise which I will refer to as ‘word-splurge’. (No, that’s not the technical term but I don’t know what is!) It was interesting how some words encouraged an emotion that affected how I interpreted the next word. Some words would pull me out of whatever (funk?) I was in and sometimes it took me in a surprising direction.
Words included: YELLOW; LOVE; CHAIR; BLUE; RAGE; HEART; BLACK; JOY; FLOOR (or FLAW); RED (or READ); PAIN; MOON; GREEN; BUZZ; PHONE; ORANGE; DOUBT; CAKE; OLYMPICS.
Why don’t you try it out for yourself?
This week’s homework was to develop one of the phrases into a mini scene and read ‘Blue/Orange’ by Joe Penhall.
